Butler was a newsman and press agent, a police reporter for the Times Herald, a newsman for radio station WWDC and a correspondent for United Press International. He moved from Stubenville, Ohio to Washington D.C. in 1937 as a part time student & employee of Providence Hospital. After WWII he worked as a
free-lance press agent for local television personalities and Washington businessmen. He later specialized in reporting news of the Korean War for radio station WWDC. He was a member of the National Press Club, The American Newspaper Guild, a partner in Rite-Way Cleaners and a member of the Church of the Assumption of Washington, D.C. Stella Martha DePollo was married to John Franklin Butler on the 5th of February 1942 at the Cathedral of the Assumption, 408 N. Charles St. Baltimore, Maryland. She worked as a nurse at Providence Hospital. Although her Death Certificate, Marriage License, Marriage Certificate and obituary notices list her name as Martha M. (DePollo) Butler, but her Birth Certificate and the Registry of Births (Tucker County, WVA) list her given name as Stella Martha DePollo.
